Canada's Fundamental Science Review

The Government of Canada published the final report of the expert panel on Canada’s Fundamental Science Review. Commissioned by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, the report by the blue-ribbon panel offers a comprehensive review of the mechanisms for federal funding that supports research undertaken at academic institutions and research institutes across Canada, as well as the levels of that funding.

Governor General’s Gold Medals

Deadline: May 15
Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation, created the Academic Medals in 1873 to encourage academic excellence across the nation. Over the years, they have become the most prestigious award that students in Canadian schools can receive. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General by participating educational institutions, along with personalized certificates signed by the Governor General. FGS has had fewer nominations than expected in recent years—ordinarily we expect nominations from every program.

Postdoctoral Supervisor of the Year Award

Deadline: June 1
Recognition will be given to one Postdoctoral Supervisor who has demonstrated exemplary support for postdoctoral scholars at York University, exceeding general supervisory expectations.

UBC PhD Career Outcomes

The research PhD was created to support the development of individuals able to use the power of rigorous scholarly inquiry to advance society. If the academy is committed to ensuring the relevance of the degree for the 21st century, we need to understand how our graduates are, or could be, contributing to the world today. For the first time, UBC Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies has taken on the challenge of systematically tracking these outcomes, starting with the 3805 students who graduated between 2005-13. The website gives a great overview.

Summer Bursaries

Deadline: May 31, 12:00pm
York University and the Faculty of Graduate Studies provide bursaries to assist full–time graduate students with financial need. Full-time graduate students whose expenses exceed their income should consider applying, or who require assistance with the payment of fees. Three bursary types are available beginning May 1.

Michael Smith CGS Foreign Study Supplements (CGSFSS)
Deadline: June 1, 3:30pm
By accessing international scientific research and training, CGSMSFSS recipients contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated research institutions and universities, or other research institutions outside of Canada. To be eligible for this award, students must currently hold a CGS award at the master's or doctoral level (Frederick Banting and Charles Best CGS (CIHR); Alexander Graham Bell CGS (NSERC); Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS (SSHRC); or Vanier CGS).

Toronto Rehab is holding a competition this year to award TD Graduate Scholarships for People with Disabilities. Scholarships of up to $20,000 + funding for education-related disability expenses will be awarded for the 2017/18 academic year.

IDRC Doctoral Research Awards 2017

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Doctoral Research Awards are open to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing doctoral studies at a Canadian university. Value: Approximately 20 grants of a maximum of CA$20,000 each.

John W Davies Memorial Scholarship 2017

Deadline: June 30
Offered by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Arctic Section, the competition is open to any full time graduate student at a recognized University in Canada or the US State of Alaska whose research will assist in providing solutions to problems encountered in the Arctic or in cold ocean environments. The attached letter contains information on research areas and selection requirements.

Call for Corporate Governance Doctoral Research Proposals

Deadline: May 17
In recognition of the growing importance of good governance to all Canadian institutions, the Canadian Foundation for Governance Research is offering up to three annual Bertram Scholarship of $15,000 to PhD students registered at Canadian universities. The scholarship will support the work of students who are conducting research into governance as part of their doctoral research project.

The Health System Impact Fellowship provides highly-qualified individuals with a doctorate degree in health services and policy research, or related fields, a unique opportunity to apply their research and analytic talents to critical challenges in health system and related organizations outside of the traditional scholarly setting and to develop professional experience, new skills, and networks. Value: $70,000 per annum, plus research allowance.

Enhancing your Experience

Lake Shift Dissertation Writing Retreat

Deadline: May 26, 3:00pm
The Faculty of Graduate Studies invites PhD students who are at the writing stage of their dissertation to apply for the Lake Shift Dissertation Writing Retreat July 9—14, 2017. Queen’s University has invited Ontario universities to send PhD students writing their dissertations to a writing retreat at its Biology Research Station on Lake Opinicon. York University has been given 5 spaces for students this summer. The dissertation writing retreat brings together students from multiple disciplines to a setting where they can concentrate on writing, and attend workshops on the writing process. Applicants must be able to attend the entire retreat.
