Gender Summit 11—Embracing Pluralism and Thriving Through Diversity—Shaping Science and Innovation

Call for 2017-18 Graduate Program Representatives on Faculty Council
Graduate Program Directors and Assistants/Coordinators are being asked to review and confirm their program's graduate student and faculty member representatives to Faculty of Graduate Studies' Council. The Opt–in and Opt–out links are currently active for the YUGSA Health Plan. Full time graduate students need not opt in since they will be automatically enrolled in September. The deadline to opt in or out ends October 22nd.

CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC Doctoral Scholarships and CGS-Masters Scholarship Applications
Please note the following York internal deadlines below. Students who are planning to apply are encouraged to review the application timeline and process early.
- CIHR Doctoral Foreign Study Awards and CGS Doctoral Awards (DFSA/CGSD): September 29, 2017;
- NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships and CGS Doctoral Awards (PGSD/CGSD): October 13, 2017 (Transcripts must be submitted to the graduate program by October 5, 2017);
- SSHRC Fellowships and CGS Doctoral Awards (DF/CGSD): October 17, 2017;
- Canada Graduate Scholarships — Masters (CGS-M): December 1, 2017.
Applications to the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and QEII Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEIIGSST) are accepted at the same time as the Tri-Council applications. Accordingly, students who are applying to OGS/QEII must also submit the application to the graduate program by the applicable deadline above. For information, please review the OGS/QEII application process.
FGS will be holding workshops on scholarship proposal writing on the following dates. Interested graduate students are encouraged to attend.

Fulbright Canada Student Awards

The Health System Impact Fellowship provides highly-qualified individuals with a doctorate degree in health services and policy research, or related fields, a unique opportunity to apply their research and analytic talents to critical challenges in health system and related organizations outside of the traditional scholarly setting and to develop professional experience, new skills, and networks. Value: $70,000 per annum, plus research allowance.
TA/International TA Orientation
New TAs, please join us for one of our TA or International TA Orientation sessions on September 1, September 5 or September 6. Participants will learn more about the roles and responsibilities of being a TA at York. They will get a chance to share their fears or uncertainties about their new roles with other new TAs and discuss strategies to overcome them, with guidance from an experienced TA. Participants will also be given different scenarios of what could happen during their TAship and they will work with their peers to determine what they would do.

Tamil Studies Symposium: Transnational Configurations of Tamil Identity

The 2017 Tamil Studies Symposium will be held at York University and at the Markham Museum. The theme of this year’s Symposium, Transnational Configurations of Tamil Identities, will create a space for interdisciplinary discussions on how transnational Tamil identities have been documented historically and politically, and performed culturally and artistically. The symposium includes eight panels, visual and performance art exhibits, a documentary screening and a keynote address by Balasingam Sukumar. All are welcome!

5th Annual National Student Paper Competition
Calling all Master's and PhD candidates. Want to be a positive influence on Canada's future? Share your ideas and make a difference. You could win a paid placement with the Government of Canada. The Grand Prize winner of the competition will receive an offer for a four-month paid placement, an invitation to present their paper on a national platform and an invitation to attend the 2018 Manion Lecture in the National Capital Region.
